Since the early 1990s, we have pursued truly sustainable heating and cooling—long before green energy became mainstream. Back then, two proven technologies had fallen out of favor in Germany: solar thermal and near-surface geothermal systems (PE piping laid at 1.3 m depth). Under VDI 4640, a full 200 % geothermal coverage was mandated—economically unviable—and many solar-collector manufacturers had already exited the market.
In 1991, we pioneered a hybrid approach: combining 50 % geothermal area with solar-thermal collectors. From day one, this system has provided Kohlpharma’s Merzig campus with reliable, ultra-low-cost heating—and, later, cooling via chilled ceilings.

Building on these decades of experience, we extended the same principles to the demanding world of AI data-center cooling—and even to zero-cost heating and cooling for residential buildings. We recognized early on that any renewable setup needs short-term storage.
